Abstract

Alexandrite (Cr-doped Chrysoberyl) is a broadly-tunable vibronic solid-state laser material with many superior thermal and mechanical properties for high power and high pulse energy operation [1]. Until now, commercial Alexandrite has been flashlamp pumped with resulting low efficiency, and almost no operation with diode-pumping has been demonstrated due to the poor availability of high power red diode lasers. Recent advent of high power (>10W), reliable red diode laser arrays has enabled the prospect of high efficiency diode-pumped Alexandrite laser technology at high power levels. We present results of breakthrough multi-Watt diode-pumped Alexandrite laser operation with high efficiency and high pulse energy, showing that this technology could have wide applicability as a compact high power tunable and /or ultrafast laser source.
