Strongly interacting Photons in Quantum Dot Cavity-QED

Abstract

A long-standing goal in the field of semiconductor cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) is the demonstration of photon blockade, where strong optical nonlinearities induce quantum correlations between successive photon emission events [1,2]. In the strong coupling regime of cavity QED the two-level quantum-emitter mediated strong photon-photon interactions ensure that the presence of one photon in the cavity blocks the capture of a second one. Here, we show unmistakable signatures of photon blockade in a strongly coupled single-quantum dot (QD) cavity system by demonstrating anti-bunching of photons upon pulsed resonant excitation of the lowest energy polariton state. When we tune the laser into two-photon resonance with the higher-lying polariton states, we observe strong bunching [3].
