Abstract
We develop novel light sources capable of producing sub-cycle optical pulses with prescribed temporal shapes. The central feature of our technique is the preparation of an ensemble of molecules in a coherent state -- a feature that has also been used in electromagnetically induced transparency, ultraslow light propagation, lasing without inversion, in proposals for analytical chemistry, and in detection of pathogens.
