Abstract

Few-cycle optical pulses feature a wide variety of potential applications in science and technology due to their short duration, large bandwidth, and high peak power. During the last few years, generation of such transients was carried out almost exclusively with laser systems based on Ti:sapphire. In parallel, the progress in fs-Er:fiber technology opened up new possibilities for flexible frequency conversion via well-controlled third-order nonlinearities in bulk fibers. Potential advantages of these systems as compared to Ti:sapphire technology include turnkey operation, cost-efficiency, low noise, and long-term operation.
