Abstract
Pump-induced index changes in the active elements of the solid-state laser oscillators and amplifiers are a principal limitation of quality and energetic parameters of the output beam. The intensively studied effect of thermal lensing in diode-pumped laser rods and disks is under discussion up to nowadays. However, another population (electronic) lensing mechanism in pumped laser crystals and glasses caused by the difference in polarizability of excited and unexcited active ions (Yb3+, Nd3+, and others) is still underestimated by many researchers. The last year the characteristics of the electronic index changes in several Nd- and Yb-doped laser materials were determined by different measurement methods [1,2]. By using these results we comparatively studied population (electronic) lensing and thermal lensing in Yb:YAG rods and disks under pulsed or CW pumping.
