Abstract

Since the demonstration, in 2004, of the first diode-pumped laser operation of Yb-doped calcium fluoride (CaF2 aka fluorite or fluorospar)[1], an intense interest of the laser community has been raised for this crystal and its isotypes : SrF2 or BaF2. Actually, this family of crystals has been demonstrated to be a very good candidate for the development of diode-pumped femtosecond lasers [2-3]. Three main reasons can explain this trend: these crystals are extremely well known, they have relatively good thermal properties suitable for high power laser development and large emission bandwidth suitable for short pulse generation. 150 fs pulse generation has been already demonstrated with an oscillator based on Yb:CaF2[4]. Nevertheless, one could expect shorter pulses considering the spectral broadness of the Yb:CaF2 spectrum.
