Influence of air-filling fraction on forward Brillouin scattering in highly birefringent PCF

Abstract

It was recently demonstrated that light and sound can be confined in the core of a photonic crystal fiber (PCF), opening up new possibilities for improved all-fiber acousto-optic (AO) devices [1]. By properly designing the micro-structured cladding one can manipulate the acoustic modes of a PCF, and cause large changes in the strength and positions of the forward Brillouin scattering peaks. In this paper, we report on the influence of cladding air-filling fraction on the spontaneous forward Brillouin spectrum in birefringent PCFs.
