Abstract

In this paper we present the progress that we have made in developing 10PW capability for the Vulcan laser to produce pulses with focused intensities >1023 Wcm-2. This represents orders of magnitude increases in intensity currently available and will be achieved using the technique of optical parametric chirped pulse amplification1,2. This project will last for four years and is structured in two phases. This power level will be delivered by generating pulses with >300J in 30fs.
