Abstract

Time-resolved spectroscopy of the dynamics of the high-energy electronic states of small molecules and clusters require femtosecond light pulses in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) spectral range. Frequency-upconversion of Ti:sapphire laser pulses using four-wave mixing in gases proved to be the most promising approach with respect to the simultaneous requirements of short pulse duration, high conversion efficiency, wavelength tunability, and high repetition rate. A promising variant of this method is off-resonant four-wave mixing (FWM) in gas-filled hollow waveguides, which demonstrated high conversion efficiency and ultrabroadband phase matching bandwidth at ~270 nm [1], In this work we extended the wavelength range of this technique to 170-180 mn using the third-hannonic of a Ti:sapphire laser as the pump and pulses from an optical parametric amplifier pumped by the same Ti:sapphire laser as the idler in the FWM process.
