Abstract

The interest in solid state laser emitting in the 2 μm region is continuously increasing because they can be used to develop eye-safe compact devices suitable for several applications such as DIAL measurements, telecommunication or medical equipment. The samples under investigation were LiLuF4 (LLF) crystals with 0.3%, 8%, 12%, 16% Thulium doping density. We will present our results regarding growth, absorption and emission spectroscopy, Judd-Ofelt analysis and laser experiments as a function of the dopant density. The 2 μm emission of Tm3+ has been studied in different hosts [1], but, to the best of our knowledge this is the first detailed analysis of the properties of Tm:LLF.
