A novel SBS-laser oscillator scheme with active and passive mode locking

Abstract

In SBS laser oscillator ns-pulses can be generated very efficiently via passive Q-switch based on the nonlinear reflectivity of the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) [1]. In addition the phase conjugating properties of such an SBS-mirror can lead to excellent beam qualities at high average output powers. The longitudinal modes from this laser experience an inherent mode locking via the SBS-process. We extended this oscillator scheme in two different variants. Both variants were realised with a Nd:YAG rod as laser active material. The SBS material used was SF6 at a pressure of 20 bar. In the first version s loss modulator e.g. an AOM was added, thereby supporting the SBS-mode locking mechanism [2] actively (see top of fig. 1).
