Abstract

We demonstrate nanoparticle sensing with quasi-droplet modes in an ultrathin-walled hollow whispering gallery resonator (WGR). The quasi-droplet whispering gallery modes (WGMs) allow the detection sensitivity to go beyond that achieved by the weak interactions of the evanescent field in solid WGRs. Experimental results with our hollow WGRs show 400 MHz mode shifts for WGM interaction with 100 nm particles and a corresponding linewidth broadening of 75 MHz, exceeding the detection sensitivity previously reported.
