Abstract
The characteristics of a compact Brillouin/erbium fiber laser (BEFL) are demonstrated, which uses a length of 4-m erbium-doped fiber (EDF) as both the Brillouin and linear gain media. This BEFL presents very low threshold in short gain medium due to its novel mechanism. Moreover, over 50-dB phase noise suppression is demonstrated after the Brillouin pump is transferred to ultra-narrow Brillouin Stokes emission. This BEFL is of great importance in interferometric acoustic fiber sensing.
