New Design of Terahertz Metallic Photonic Crystal with Mechanically Tunable Photonic-Band-Gap

Abstract

A new design of THz photonic crystal (PC) the photonic band gap (PBG) of which is mechanically controllable is proposed. The PC is composed of metal rods with a two-dimensional square lattice. To confine THz wave perpendicular to the periodicity plane, the PC is sandwiched by parallel metal plates with air gap between the upper plate and the PC rods. The THz properties have been studied by a finite-difference time-domain simulation and a THz time-domain spectroscopy measurement. The PBG systematically widens with decreasing air gap.
