Determination of the Atom Number in a Bose Condensate by Optical Pumping

Abstract

We demonstrate a technique to determine the atom number in a Bose condensate based on optical pumping. Multiple measurements can be performed in the same condensate. In our case, about 1.95 × 104 atoms are measured with a precision of ±17 %.
