Filming the vibrational cooling of I2 in CCl4 by ultrafast x-ray diffraction

Abstract

A time-resolved x-ray-diffraction experiment was conducted to study the vibrational cooling of iodine molecules dissolved in CCl4. The variation of atom-atom distances are probed with a milliangstrom spatial resolution and picosecond time resolution. Preliminary analysis shows that time-dependent I-I atom-atom distribution can be linked to a vibrational cooling process.
