Abstract

Starting with capacity and sensitivity-constrained transport (fiber-optic networks, satellite links), optics is steadily replacing electronics, progressing into implementation-constrained (on-chip) applications. At the same time, significant innovations are needed to continue optical transport capacity scaling.
