Photon Statistics and Wave-Particle Correlations for an EIT System

Abstract

We consider the photon statistics and wave-particle correlations of an system exhibiting electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), in free space and a cavity. We find nonclassical behavior that cannot be explained by coupled oscillators, unlike the transparency itself. The phenomena of EIT, and the related slow light experiments, can be explained using quantum interference[1]. That is the total absorption rate is the square of the sum of probability amplitudes, some of which can be negative, the end result being no absorption in the steady state. A typical 3 level system that exhibits such behavior is shown below, where e is a weak probe on the 1->2 transition, and E is a strong driving field on the 2->3 transition.
