Spectral compression of ultrafast pulses using transiently aligned molecules

Abstract

We demonstrate temporal phase modulation of an ultrafast pulse by a time-dependent refractive index of transiently aligned anisotropic gas molecules. This allows for the generation of transform limited pulses that are tunable in duration.
