Abstract

The carrier-envelope phase (CEP), also referred to as absolute phase, reflects the position of optical fringes of the electric field of a short laser pulse within its envelope. Recently a number of clever methods to measure both a shot-to-shot variation of CEP and its absolute value have been proposed and demonstrated experimentally.1-4 Several research groups are currently pursuing the goal of constructing CEP-stabilized sources of high-intensity fs pulses, which are required in field-sensitive applications of nonlinear optics,5 such as high-order harmonic generation and coherent X-ray production. In this contribution we show that severe technical problems associated with the practical implementation of the active CEP control at kHz repetition rates can be readily obviated by employing unique properties of parametric amplification.
