Abstract

Saturation properties of transition metal-ion doped solids are of great interest for applications in passive Q-switching of solid-state lasers. The population inversion is built up by excitation process until the gain inside the cavity exceeds the loss in the cavity. Upon the insertion of a saturable absorber into a laser cavity, the absorption of photon oscillations inside the cavity saturates at some level of intensity, thus opening the cavity, resulting in the development of a short and intense laser pulse.1
