Abstract
The Smith-Purcell free electron laser (SP-FEL) is a potentially compact cw source of tunable, mW, where L is the grating period, v is the electron velocity, c the speed of light and 0 the observation angle. To achieve this potential, the gain mechanism of the electron beam-electromagnetic wave interaction must be well understood. We report that the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) behavior in the vicinity of the lasing threshold provides an important clue in this pursuit.
