Abstract

Chirped pulse amplification (CPA) using a broadband Ce3+:LiCaAlF6 (Ce:LiCAF) crystal as the gain medium has been demonstrated for the first time in the ultraviolet region.1 The peak power of the amplified and compressed pulse (τ ~ 115 fs) at 290 nm reached to 30 GW. For further peakpower scaling up to terawatt (TW) level, one can try to improve the output pulse energy or compress the pulse width. CetLiCAF has been shown to have a broad tunability from 281 nm to 315 nm, which can support the generation and amplification of 3-fs pulse.2–5 It is reasonable to select a very short pulse with a broad spectrum width. Recently, a powerful pulse-compression technique based on self-phase-modulation (SPM)6 in a hollow fiber filled with noble gases demonstrated the capability of generating ultrashort.7–11 In this presentation, we report the generation of intense 15-μJ, 25-fs pulses at 290 nm by use of a hollow fiber filled with high-pressure argon gas. These ultrashort ultraviolet pulses can be expected as the seed pulses of TW Ce:LiCAF laser system.
