Abstract

The monoclinic crystals KY(WO4)2 (KYW) and KGd( WO4), (KGdW) used as hosts for Yb3+ provide larger absorption and emission cross sections and smaller quantum defect than YAG which is especially important for the quasi two- level system of Yb3+.1 These advantages have been demonstrated in the thin disk laser concept for efficient diode laser pumping2 which is in particular relevant to highly doped materials with short absorption lengths.
