Back-side coated chirped mirrors for dispersion compensation over one octave

Abstract

In the recent years, pulses of about 5 fs duration have been demonstrated using a variety of different schemes, 1 including direct generation in an oscillator, compression of amplified pulses, optical parametric amplifiers, and most recently Raman side-band generation. Some of these methods are already close to the limit given by the available bandwidth of the process, but dispersion compensation for such short pulses has been the major obstacle to further progress and shorter pulse duration.
