Abstract
The phase of a laser beam is one of its defining characteristics, yet phase is rarely thought of as a parameter that can control physical processes. In recent years several groups working with atoms, molecules and solids have shown how phase and the quantum mechanical superposition principle can be combined to control and indeed induce novel end states in matter.
