Communication links: Where will VCSELs contribute?

Abstract

Industry, DARPA, and academia have invested heavily in vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) based on the promise that VCSELs will be an enabler for low-cost high-speed optical communication links. Promises made 10 years ago will be compared to the present status of VCSELs in communication links and then some predictions regarding VCSELs for optical links will be addressed.
