Abstract

Polarization effects due to the complicated interaction of polarization mode dispersion (PMD), polarization dependent loss (PDL), and polarization dependent gain (PDG) can significantly impair optical fiber transmission systems and can even lead to fading, in which an entire channel is temporarily lost.
