Nonreciprocity in waveguide second harmonic generation

Abstract

Second-order nonlinearities have prompted a great deal of interest because of the possibility of generating large nonlinear phase shifts as a result of cascaded processes.1 Realizing that in SHG both the conversion efficiency and the nonlinear phase are important in the process leads to a variety of other phenomena. One of the most important signatures of cascaded processes is that they depend on the spatial distribution of the wave-vector phase mismatch (Δk L). The evolution of the nonlinear process at any point effectively depends on the incident (seeding) fundamental and harmonic fields resulting from propagation up to that point. We found that if the wave-vector distribution along the propagation is spatially nonuniform, the SHG exhibits a nonreciprocal behavior, i.e., the SHG response depends on which end of the waveguide is the input end. This response was numerically predicted using the couple mode equations for SHG including the terms involving the spatial variation in Δk L.
