Abstract
The increasing need for cost-effective data transmission over standard fibers has given a new impulse to R&D on multiple quantum well (MQW) lasers. We report on the optimization of 1.55-µm MQW distributed feedback (DFB) lasers in terms of laser dynamics for high-bit-rate operation (2.5 Gbit/s) in a wide temperature range (−40 to +95°C). Besides a high side-mode suppression, such lasers must have a high relaxation frequancy and sufficient damping of the oscillation in order to keep transient chirp low.
