Abstract

Chalcogenide glasses might be used to form refractive and relief structures for applications in integrated optics or optical data storage. Photodarkening and photo-expansion are the primary recording mechanisms in these materials. Photodarkening1 is a photo-induced red shift of the optical absorption edge. This shift is accompanied by an increase in the index of refraction in the transparent photon energy region. Index changes as high as 1% are possible. The volume and elasticity of chalcogenide glasses increase when they are photodarkened.1−3
