Abstract
Recently the interest has increased in nontraditional application of nonlinear frequency-conversion processes in fast- response modulating devices for laser mode-locking and optical switching. The effect of cascaded second-order nonlinearity in two-pass intracavity second-harmonic generation has been applied for passive mode-locking of lasers both in pulsed1 and cw regimes.2 To achieve stable operation of an intensity-dependent mirror reflection by using the cascaded process and reliable formation or shortening of light pulses it is desirable to have a sufficiently high intensity of radiation in the laser cavity. The rise of intensity can be attained with the use of active mode-locking that makes the requirements to nonlinear mirror parameters feasible.
