Abstract

Laser radiation in the wave length range around 3 mcm is of significant importance for surgical applications. Strong absorption of(non-Italic) light by tissues with a coefficient as large as 104 cm−1 causes low thresholds of ablation and coagulation processes and minimizes areas of thermal damage around treatment zones. One of the problems restraining a wide use of this radiation in clinics is a lack of reliable, high-damage threshold fiber delivery systems. In this report, we present the results on developing a laser microsurgery complex comprising an YAG:Er laser with 2 W average power, a chalcogenide fiber delivery system with the unique damage threshold, and an optical coherence tomography (OCT) device for in situ monitoring of superficial layers of operated tissues.
