Abstract

We compare the noise performance of a 980 nm laser-diode-pumped (LD-pumped) ring erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) with a Fabry-Perot (FP) EDFL that is pumped by a diode-pumped Nd: YLF laser. For frequencies greater than 200 Hz, the measured rms timing jitter is 3.2 ps for the FP EDFL and 1.8 ps for the ring EDFL, We find that the phase noise below 200 Hz in the FP EDFL is primarily due to mode hopping in the Nd:YLF pump laser. The performance of the ring EDFL is competitive with passively, mode-locked semiconductor lasers1 and should be appropriate for transmission, switching, and sampling applications.
