Abstract

A new Arctic Stratospheric Observatory (AStrO) was opened at Eureka (80N, 86W) by the Canadian Atmospheric Environment Service (AES) in January of 1993 as one of the Primary stations in the Network for the Detection of Stratospheric Change (NDSC). As part of the instrumentation AStrO contains two lidar systems. One is a Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) system based on a 300 Hz XeCl laser operating at 308 nm with a hydrogen stimulated Raman cell to generate first Stokes radiation at 353 nm. The second lidar is a two wavelength, dual polarization Nd:YAG system. The DIAL system is operated by a group from ISTS/York and the Nd:YAG lidar is operated by a team of Japanese researchers.
