Abstract

The homogeneous nematic liquid crystal (HNLC) is a suitable material for phase-only spatial light modulators, which are useful in various electro-optic systems.1,2 Its electro-optic response is subject to both material and device parameters, including boundary conditions. For optimum design accurate knowledge of these parameters and a model with reasonable precision and speed are required. Though the variational formalism of free-energy density under the continuum approximation is available,3,4 there have been only a few reports that have dealt with the characterization of homogeneous liquid-crystal cells.
