Power coupling by four-wave mixing in single-mode fibers

Abstract

Efficient four-wave mixing (FWM) in single-mode fibers1 has been proven possible near the zero-dispersion frequency. As a result, significant signal depletion may occur if the powers of the waves involved in FWM exceed 10 dBm.3 This FWM-induced power depletion is undesirable for multichannel lightwave systems. In this paper, we analyze the power coupling by using partially degenerate four-wave mixing (PDFWM) in multichannel lightwave systems. Signal depletion in terms of the FWM-induced loss is calculated for various initial conditions.
