Abstract

Wavelength-selective switches and filters are important for wavelength-multiplexed transmission and switching systems. Waveguide-type grating filters have been reported as such of filters.1,2 However these filters are not suitable for use as a multiplexer/demultiplexer component because reflected signal goes back to the signal source. Spatial separation of the transmitted and reflected signals would allow the filter to act not only a wavelength-tunable multiplexer/demultiplexer but also as a new kind of switching device, which we call a wavelength-selective router. Here, we propose a new structure, a grating switch integrated with a directional couplE), that achieves this spatial separation. We also report what we believe to be the first demonstration of switching operation.
