Optical diffusion imaging with single and multiple sources

Abstract

Recently, optical imaging in highly scattering biological media has been intensively investigated for applications such as safe, noninvasive imaging and spectroscopy.1,2 In diffusion imaging, a modulation is applied to the optical carrier, which propagates through the medium with typically low loss and high scatter. The diffusion model is then applied to the received modulation envelope to invert the desired image or spectroscopic data from the scattered data. Sensitivity and resolution depend greatly on many factors, including the measurement configuration and the quality of the forward-scatter model. For this reason, we have studied critical aspects of the forward model and the measurement configuration.
