High-power dye and excimer lasers using steady-state amplification by chirped pulses

Abstract

The chirped pulse amplification (CPA)1 technique made possible efficient energy extraction from solid-state amplifiers without causing optical damage. To date, CPA has not been used with nonstorage media, such as dyes and excimers. The low saturation fluence of these materials limits their energy output for pulses significantly shorter than the gain lifetime. Under strong pumping the large gain available, because of the large emission cross section, causes a significant energy depletion by amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) before the main pulse arrives. For narrow-band amplification obtained by using dye or excimer lasers, the pulse width is equivalent to the gain duration and it was demonstrated that the ASE could be suppressed and that almost all the stored energy could be extracted. The same efficient extraction can be obtained with broadband pulses if the initial short pulse is stretched to a duration comparable to the gain lifetime. In that case the signal can compete very efficiently with the ASE, leading to efficient energy extraction. This steady-state amplification is accomplished ideally in a saturated regime.
