Abstract
Chirped pulse amplification1 (CPA) systems based on Ti: Sapphire have become quite common and even commercially available at the terrawatt level. Because most of these systems are pumped by commercially available Nd: YAG pump lasers, the compressed energy is typically limited to 150-200 mJ. We have previously reported production of energy in excess of this 200 mJ limit using flashlamp pumped Ti: Sapphire2 and Cr:LiSAF3 and other groups have reported production of 1 J level energies using large flashlamp pumped Cr: LiSAF amplifiers. 4,5 Our goal is to go beyond this level by another factor of ten and we report on the results of our first step at scaling beyond the 1 J level using Nd:Glass lasers to pump large Ti:Sapphire disk amplifiers.
