Abstract

The recent emergence of many integrated and fiber-optical devices has led to an increased interest in waveguide-grating filters. Among these devices are dispersion-compensating filters that employ chirped gratings to counteract the dispersion of fiber communication systems.1,2 It is essential to measure both the amplitude and the phase response of grating filters in order to completely characterize their performance. However, making accurate phase measurements is not a trivial task, and thus most reports of these devices do not include such measurements.
