Abstract

Recent studies have shown that radiation effects can be important in the selection of a nonlinear material for second-harmonic-generation (SHG) applications in the space environment. KD*P was found to be insensitive to large doses of gamma radiation,1 whereas KTP was susceptible to relatively moderate radiation doses.2 In the latter case, the decrease in SHG efficiency was predominately due to radiation-induced absorption near the second-harmonic wavelength. In this paper we present experimental data showing the magnitude of the radiation-induced absorption in another nonlinear crystal, BBO, and its effect on SHG. As in KTP,2 the observed decrease in SHG efficiency can be accounted for by increased absorption at the second harmonic. The effects in BBO were found to be much smaller than those in KTP, and they also annealed quite rapidly at room temperature.
