Ultrafast nonlinear response in PLZT thin films with applied femtosecond pulses

Abstract

Time-resolved field-induced second-harmonic generation is investigated in 35/0/100 PLZT thin films. The electric field applied to the thin film is derived from a fast photoconductive switch. The switch consists of a coplanar-waveguide-structure circuit and a Si-on-sapphire substrate. It includes a narrow central electrode (at high voltage) sandwiched between two conductive surfaces; one of them is at the same high voltage as the central electrode, where as the other is grounded. The high voltage is up to 200 V. The widths of the gaps' and the central electrode are designed for a 50-Ω characteristic impedance. The PLZT thin film is directly deposited on the circuit with an acetate-precursor process.
