Anomalous-dispersion phase-matched second harmonic generation in polymer waveguides

Abstract

We report on second-harmonic generation in a waveguide by using anomalous-dispersion phase matching (ADPM). In ADPM, a Chromophore with an absorption maximum between the fundamental and the harmonic wavelengths is doped into a host polymer that exhibits normal dispersion. At the proper Chromophore concentration, the normal dispersion of the host on the high-energy side of the absorption is canceled by the anomalous dispersion of the chromophore, creating equal indices of refraction at the fundamental and harmonic wavelengths. The use of ADPM has previously been demonstrated in solution by using electric-field-induced second-harmonic generation1 (EFISH).
