Abstract
Diode-pumped lasers are clearly more appropriate to "real world" applications than systems requiring a large-frame (e.g., ion) pump laser. We report here on picosecond and femtosecond pulse generation from the first cw mode-locked, diode-pumped tunable solid-state lasers based on Cr:LiSrAlF6 (Cr:LiSAF). In principle, an all-solid-state diode-pumped tunable femtosecond laser system could be realized with CnLiSAF providing the gain medium in both amplifier and oscillator to yield ultrashort pulse energies up to μJ for only a few watts of diode pump power. Diode-pumping of a c.w. CnLiSAF laser at ~670 nm has been demonstrated (e.g., ref. 1).
