Two-mode intensity bistability in cross-coupled bistable laser diodes

Abstract

Bistable laser diodes (BLDs) have important applications as optical memory elements in future broadband all-optical time-division switching systems.1 However, conventional two-section intensity BLDs, as well as two-mode BLDs based on wavelength or polarization bistability, suffer from serious shortcomings in terms of speed or ease of implementation which limit their usefulness in such systems. In this talk, we describe the theory of operation and experimental realization of the cross-coupled bistable laser diode (XCBLD), a new type of optical memory device based on intensity bistability between two orthogonally propagating cavity modes.
