Novel bandwidth source for laser fusion

Abstract

We report the development of a novel four-frequency bandwidth source for laser fusion experiments on Nova with a capability similar to that planned for the proposed National Ignition Facility. The technique is based on self-phase modulation (SPM) of two frequencies 5 Å apart in an optical fiber (Fig. 1). One of the limitations of beam smoothing techniques used with solid state laser systems has been the inability to efficiently frequency convert broadband pulses to the third harmonic (3510 Å).1
