Application of the Er:YAG laser to middle ear surgery: pressure effects

Abstract

The use of the CO2, argon-ion and frequency-doubled Nd:YAG lasers has become widely accepted in the treatment of otosclerosis, a disease in which the stapes, one of the bones involved in acoustic transmission in the middle ear, becomes “frozen” by bony growths. Current therapy involves the use of these lasers to cut a hole or window (fenestration) in the footplate of the stapes (“stapedotomy”) and the subsequent implantation of a prosthesis.
