Abstract
Direct drive laser fusion requires accurate teset focus -profite cortad» to resuYi fin -uniform drive on a pellet. The Nike KrF laser system uses the inherent spatial incoherence concept1 to limit the effects of nonuniformity on the focal profile due to amplifier gain and phase non-uniformities. However, if an amplifier is not exactly in the Fourier plane of the optical system or the nonlinearity' in the pumping is severe, this will still disturb the focal profile even with the ISI technique. Uniform pumping of the amplifier and efficient extraction should also be used to give good profiles at high energy.
